What is "bad"?
In English class we had a debate concerning the children involved in the book The Lord of The Flies. The two topics discussed were whether Jack was an effective leader and if all of the kids were bad before the island. Today, I am just going to discuss the kids and if they were actually bad before the island because I did not get the chance to put forth all my ideas during class due to time restrictions. I believe the kids were not bad before the island. Many classmates argued against me but put forth redundant information such as the fact that kids made fun of Piggy. Teasing does not make a child bad, it makes them unethical. The definition of bad is not such as to be hoped for or desired; unpleasant or unwelcome. So technically the child should be declared as bad, right? But he isn't, one action doesn't justify a persons overall behavior. So then what makes an action good or bad? How far does something need to go for it to be bad? As I stated before, I believe the kids were not bad before the island, but instead turned bad because of the island. The fear sprung about by the kid with the maroon face triggered a defensive switch in all the kids minds. The kids performed actions they thought were best fit. You can relate this to the quote from The Dark Knight by Harvey Dent , "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain". This justifies why the kids turned bad, the conditions and longevity of their stay on the island. This can also be said for other fictional characters such as Superman. In the injustice universe, Louis Lane lane dies which triggers something inside Superman that makes him turn into an evil overlord. He no longer cares about the human race, and begins to kill most criminals depending on their crimes. Once a god now an enemy. Then there is also the case of Anakin Skywalker. He was the chosen one, the almighty jedi that would end the Sith once and for all. However, the anger stirred from his mothers death, drove him to try and save his wifes life, and ended up killing her instead. Then frustrated with his own anger, becomes a leader of the Galactic Empire, destroying planets and life forms one by one. Nobody is born bad, it is all the result of an unpleasant event.
I commented but I don't think I hit publish before leaving the page. Either way, at the risk of repeating myself, I'll say that I liked this post. Good connections to other works.
