How can rhetoric be used in manipulation?
Rhetoric can be used in manipulation by using extremist ideals in a debate or in a worldly situation. W hen disagreements are so driven and distorted by extremist rhetoric that citizens and public officials fail to engage with one another reasonably or respectfully on substantive issues of public importance, the debate degenerates, blocking constructive compromises that would benefit all sides more than the status quo would. Rhetoric is often mislabeled as manipulation, but rhetoric is actually concerned with persuasion. "Psychological manipulation is a type of social influence that aims to change the perception or behavior of others through underhanded, deceptive, or even abusive tactics. By advancing the interests of the manipulator, often at another's expense, such methods could be considered exploitative, abusive, devious and deceptive."
